Book 3 in Greece; Legacy is a Pop Paperback of 2012!

Hi everybody!

First off, as I posted on Facebook a few days ago, book 3 of the Legacy Series has officially been sold to my Greek publisher.  I don't have a release date yet, but this means that book 3 will definitely be reaching my Greek readers, and I couldn't be happier! :)

Second... da da da da!  Legacy has been listed as one of the Young Adult Library Services Association's Popular Paperbacks of 2012!  This is huge news, and its all thanks to you wonderful readers who have been buying, reading, and sharing the book with your friends.  Check out the entire list here (Legacy is under the category "Forbidden Romance"):

Just a reminder:  Allegiance will be coming out here in the USA on February 28, 2012, which is now less than a month away.  I will be doing a blog tour, courtesy of Kismet Blog Tours, and details are forthcoming.  I do want to let you all know about a very special event coming up at the end of March.

On March 24th at 5pm I will be at the Bowers Writers House in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania to do a joint reading with Pam Chillemi-Yeager.  Copies of Allegiance will be available to purchase, and I will be signing books and answering questions.  Please please please stop on by!  Seating is limited, so it's first-come first-serve.  There is no entry fee.  The address and phone number for the Bowers Writers House can be found here:

I hope to see you there, and I'll be posting reminders of the event as it approaches.

You Could Win a Copy of ALLEGIANCE

Hi all!  I'm done with my first semester of college and I'm home at last for Christmas break.  To commemorate this bit of awesomeness, I have news that is even more awesome.

I was invited by Asher of Paranormal Indulgence to participate in Dog-Eared & Bookmarked's 25 Days of Jubilation event.  This Friday (the 23rd), Steldor will compete with other young adult heroes/anti-heroes to be transferred from Santa's naughty list to his nice list.  Only one character will succeed, and its up to readers who that character will be.

If Steldor wins, his supporters will be entered into a pool to win a free copy of Legacy, and an advance copy of Allegiance!

Obviously, I would love for Steldor to have a shot at getting something other than coal in his stocking this year.  But more importantly, I would LOVE for one of you to receive an advance copy of Allegiance!

Watch for the link on my Twitter and Facebook on Friday the 23rd, and let's get out the vote! :)

Out in the Silence GIVEAWAY (Please Read Instructions)

I'm baaaaaack!!!!!!!

And I have exciting news for you all.  Tonight I was privileged enough to attend a screening of Out in the Silence, an award-winning documentary about a gay teenager in small town Pennsylvania.  The filmmakers, Joe Wilson and Dean Hamer, began their journey when they published their marriage announcement in the local paper of Joe's home town.  Shortly thereafter, the hate mail started pouring in, followed by an unexpected cry for help from a mother whose son was being "tortured" at school because of his sexual orientation.

The film follows Joe's investigation and his efforts to help this boy, while revealing the damage bigotry is doing to everyone in our communities.

I encourage you to check out the film's official website, www.outinthesilence.com, and BUY THE DVD.  It represents an amazing feat in filmmaking, as well as in the fight for human rights.

Now for the really great news.  Joe Wilson was present at the screening, and I talked to him afterward (and bought my own copy of the movie!).  He was kind enough to supply me with three SIGNED Out in the Silence postcards (pictured below), which I am going to give away here on the blog!

INSTRUCTIONS:
To enter the postcard giveaway contest, comment on this post.  Please ONLY COMMENT ONCE.  You will not be entered into the giveaway multiple times if you leave multiple comments.  Please note that this contest is open only to residents of the United States (I only have so many stamps!).

Thank you so much, and once again, I do encourage you to check out the film, watch it with your friends, share it with your enemies, and over all, enjoy!

(P.S. Spread the word about the contest too!)

Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz

So I've been away for a while, but the time I spent holed up in my office was well-spent - I read Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz (who by the way is an adorable and wonderful person), and I absolutely loved it.

Followers of the blog have probably picked up that I don't really read young adult fiction even though I'm a young adult author - the Need2Reads I post are always either mystery or adult lit.  I'm kind of strange that way.  But because I share a book birthday with Cara, I of course had to dive in to her story.  And I'm so very happy I did!

The moment I knew Spellbound had me hooked was when the main character, Emma, compared the smell of a perfume to "a unicorn fart".  Later on, the same perfume was described as "munchkin sweat".  These are clear indications of brilliance.

(FYI - THERE WILL BE MILD SPOILERS AHEAD.)

First let's talk about Emma.  What I loved about her was that she's been through a hell of a lot, but she's not your typical world-weary protagonist.  She definitely wants a better life, she wants a chance to start over.  She hasn't given up.  I adored her defensive cynicism, because it fit perfectly with what she's lived through.  I loved that she would go to school without doing her hair and makeup (that's what I always did because nobody can look good that early in the morning anyway), and I loved that her habits on that front didn't really change after she got involved with Brendan.  Emma has a "this is what I am, this is as good as it's gonna get" approach to her appearance, which is refreshing.

Brendan is a delicious bad boy with uber respect for women.  I'm not going to talk too much about him because you guys should get to discover him on your own as you read.  But I heart him (and so does my friend who started reading the book before I'd even finished it).

The ending of Spellbound was riveting.  (This is where things get a bit spoilery.)  As a young woman, I found Anthony to be a terrifying character.  The way that Emma refers to him as "the monster" is so accurate in terms of how many women are forced to look at the world.  If I see a group of guys on the sidewalk, I cross the street so I don't have to risk passing by them.  I don't walk to my car by myself.  I don't go to public bathrooms by myself because public bathrooms are a high risk place for women to be assaulted.  And Anthony embodies every little thought and experience that urges me to make those decisions regarding my safety.  I would venture to say that Spellbound is a good read for young women, but especially for young men - it's so important for guys to understand the ways in which women are forced to view the world differently from them.  And Spellbound illustrates this perfectly.

All in all, this is a great read.  Either for tanning by the pool or for intellectual discussion.  There are layers to it and it can be enjoyed on myriad levels.

Buy this one, ladies and gents!

Til next time,

Cayla
