Need2Read 6/7/11

1. Psycho by Robert Bloch

I may be the only person who didn't know that Psycho was based on a book, but now that I do know, I gots to read it.

2. Eden Close by Anita Shreve

Anita Shreve's first book - and it sounds fantastic.  Obviously it launched a humongous career.  Anyone read it?

3. Hold Still by Nina LaCour

It wasn't explicit on the back cover, but I'm pretty sure the main character's best friend commits suicide, and the book is about her struggle to hang on to her life in the aftermath.  Sounds really compelling and oddly familiar.  I think this might be a good one for me to read personally.

4. Every Last One by Anna Quindlen

This book appeals to me because I love emotional journey books.  Again, back cover isn't explicit about the goings-on in this book, but the emotional theme is definitely there.  I'll have to read it to find out what's what.

5. The Girl in the Steel Corset by Kady Cross

By fellow HQT author Kady Cross, which is incentive enough if it weren't for that gorgeous cover and the fascinating plot description.  I actually haven't read a YA book in a while; perhaps its time for me to make a landing again.

Need2Read 5/24/11

Before I list my Need2Reads, I want to give you guys some news and links...

First, I went on WhatchYAreading's podcast and had a ton of fun with Caitlin and Christine.  You can listen to the whole discussion about the different types of publishing (and other random stuff) here:

I've been invited back sometime around or after the release of LEGACY on June 28th, and I will definitely be taking them up on the offer!

Now, I spent three hours wandering around Borders today (unfortunately with empty pockets), and I made a big list of books I want to get.  Here goes nothing.

1. FAIL Nation

I so need this book.  I was flipping through it at the store and laughing out loud, which you fellow book people know is not a well-received activity in a bookstore.  Check out their website, www.failblog.org.

2. Heartsick by Chelsea Cain

I remember looking at this book a long time ago - I think I bought a P. D. James book instead.  Anyway, I stumbled upon it again today and now I can't figure out why I didn't buy it.  Okay, I just did a Google search and I think the first book in this series is SWEETHEART.  So actually that's the one I should get.  Just kidding!  Hehe.  Anyway, those who know me know I love a good morbid story (strange, since I write about princesses).  I think the basis of this series is a detective who is personally and professionally tormented by a female serial killer.  Sounds like a great read.  Anyone familiar?

3. Talking About Detective Fiction by P. D. James

Followers of the blog know I have mad love for this woman.  I'm super excited to learn her views and methods regarding the genre she rules.

4. The Action Bible

I was in the children's section (reading MadLibs, alright?) when I spotted this and just thought, "What a fabulous idea."  It's realistic, gripping artwork (as opposed to some of the lame cherub-style religious artwork they aim at children).  They should do this with all religious texts.  What a way to bring them alive.  They should do this with history books too.  How much fun would that be??

5. Twelve by Nick McDonell

I haven't seen the Joel Schumacher movie based on this book, but I heart me some Joel Schumacher (Lost Boys, anyone?) and I know he has a taste for things that go off the beaten path.  This book sounds controversial and interesting.  Can't wait to read it.

Rock 'n Roll or Something

Hey there folks!  I'm back.  I've finished up a rough (very rough, mostly horrible awful) draft of that manuscript I was working on and will soon be sending it to my agent.  But it's mostly out of my hair for the moment, so now I have time to do the fun stuff, like blogging and talking to you guys.

Things on my list that I must talk about:

1) Common is awesome and I don't know what the big deal is about him being at the White House.  The messages in his music/poetry are nothing Dylan, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bono, and tons of others haven't sent a million times before. (That argument is courtesy of Jon Stewart.)

2) I have in fact finished reading Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey.  It was the first high fantasy book I've ever read, if I'm being honest.  It was a completely different reading experience than I've had previously, and man is that woman good at what she does.  Anne McCaffrey, FTW.  Definitely check it out if you are into fantasy, or if, like me, you're unfamiliar with the epic subdivision thereof.

3) I need some major chill-out time, which means I'm getting back to reading and will be posting about wonderful books soon enough.

4) I'm getting back to the Facebook fan page ASAP!  I know there are questions waiting on there for me so I'm headed that way, no worries.

5) Ooh, 5 is perhaps the most important one.  My email is broken.  So if anyone out there has tried to contact me using my usual email address, um... I haven't gotten your messages.  Sorry!  I'm trying to get it sorted out.

Well, it is three in the morning here in Wisconsin and I desperately need to get some sleep. I've got really cool news coming up soon though, so don't be a stranger.
